2046

remember last week when i posted about the film in the mood for love? these are images from it’s “sequel” 2046.  story-wise i believe i enjoyed the former more, but 2046 is still visually just as stunning.

does anyone have any other chinese film suggestions as good as these?  i will definitely follow wong kar wai in the future more (though i’ve seen my blueberry nights and that was horrible, imo, and not worth anyone’s time.) but his art direction, styling, cinematography, actors, etc. are all fabulous.  i just think his pacing is a bit slow, but if you are into visual films, i would highly recommend.

have you been following my film bucket list? i’m trying to knock it out of the park.

have a lovely thursday!

i’ve always heard about the film in the mood for love in passing so i put in on my bucket list.  the wong kar wai “trilogy” is an unusual concept.  what i didn’t know was that there are three separate movies- days of being wild (filmed in 1991- set in the present) in the mood for love (2000- set in the 1940′s) and 2046 (2004- set in 2046) though the two main characters have the same names in every film and their story always centers around love, they are different people and different stories in each film (but only somewhat- they are connected in the whole.  somewhat of a reincarnation theory i suppose)

i am completely floored by the immaculate tailoring of su li-zhen’s wardrobe in this film.  i’ve never seen a dress fit a woman so perfectly and beautifully.  she pulls off all of these vibrant prints and florals and retro patterns and has this air of so much class and sophistication to herself.

the story centers around two neighbors, a married woman and a married man who realize that their spouses are cheating on them.  they find comfort and solitude in each other since they know what the other is going through, but they refuse to act as their spouses did and act upon this sudden love that they discover between them.  the acting is phenomenal from both maggie cheung and tony leung.  every frame is a piece of art and though the pacing is a bit slow, it let’s your emotions and thoughts build and change throughout the film.

this film didn’t change my life, but i am glad that i watched it and it definitely gave me some new things to think about stylistically.
